Ken's Corner

Welcome Back to Ken’s Corner, Version 2.0

kens corner 2Welcome to the first installment of Ken’s Corner, Version 2.0. Like before, this is where I’ll try to help novice and low-use computer owners figure out the basics of what a computer does, what all those technical terms mean and how to work some of the programs and applications you have on your system. I’ll try to stay as non-technical as I can but still get you the complete answer to your questions.

When I say your questions, I mean exactly that. There are some topics I’ll cover in the months ahead, but if there’s a question you have, I’ll be more than happy to help. As always, if I don’t know the answer, I’ll find someone who can so we can both learn something. Matt Staats, our Senior Service Technician at Connecting Point, has been working on computers for a couple of decades and I’ve run into very few questions he didn’t have the answer for immediately.

Before you start sending your questions in, I want to mention the questions I won’t answer in this column. Don’t ask me about my opinion on something, because what’s right for me may not be right for you. I won’t tell you which computer brand is better or whether Windows is a better operating system than Mac since those are matters of personal preference and not necessarily cold hard facts.

Try to keep your questions computer-related. I will cover some things that at first might seem off-topic, but it will always come back to how this affects you and your computer needs. I’m here to help you get the most out of your computer or to help you find out what you need if you’re thinking about buying a new one.

I WILL tell you that the next few months may be the best time to purchase a computer, especially if your current system cannot run Windows 11. Windows 10 will stop receiving any support from Microsoft on Oct. 15, 2025. That means even with a good anti-virus program, your system becomes more vulnerable to security threats. Identity theft is not fun, especially if it happens during the holiday season.

You can send questions to me by email at . I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
